2. CD Release: Great Balancing Act "Cherry Bomb"

by Bob Mersereau

Sometimes we all need a breath of fresh air. You're stuck inside at your desk all day, sick of work; what you need is to step outside and take a deep breath. We know this works, and you can extend it as a metaphor into other aspects of your life. Take music for example. We tend to stick to what we know, what we like, the same few bands or styles. Too often you can get stuck in a rut, listening to the same stuff. You need a musical breath of fresh air. That's how I see Moncton's Great Balancing Act, and their new disc, Cherry Bomb. It's such a happy, poppy, pleasant, sweet and rich disc, it's like a breath of fresh air to enjoy... Great Balancing Act are one of the province's longest-serving bands, having started way back in 1994. The group features originals Jeep Morin, singer and guitar player, and bass player and singer Nina Khosla. They started writing fresh pop songs back in the early 90's, and moving to Moncton from Montreal, they set up this long-running art collective. Jeep, you see, is also a cartoonist, which fits perfectly, as the songs are filled with a cartoon fun, and funny characters like a little monkey. In fact, many of the songs on Cherry Bomb have already been turned into cartoon videos, including that very monkey, the star of Morin's full-length animated film Monkeytown...Moncton...get it? Anyway, I'm sure you're starting to get the feel of what's behind the songs...lightness and humour are perfectly matched in the sweet harmonies and 60s and 70s bubblegum pop sound. It's pretty basic guitar-bass-drums-keys, with an emphasis on the boy-girl vocals. Joining the original Great Balancing Act duo are newcomer Sara Parks on drums and more vocals, and a special guest star handling the lead guitar, none other than Moncton axeman Alex Madson, the frontman for the much-loved ECMA-winning country band The Divorcees. If you're still having a little trouble imagining the sound of Cherry Bomb, perhaps it will help to imagine The B-52's, only not so frantic, crossed with the surrealism of DEVO. In fact, the lone cover on the disc is a Devo song, "That's Good." The rest is from the fertile imagination of the group, which includes outerspace characters, quotes from Obi-Wan Kenobi, a world where Frank Sinatra has a love child with Cleopatra, and where bombs are good not bad. Or, as they sing, "it's not the scary bomb, it's the cherry bomb." ... You can also buy the disc online through CDBaby and iTunes.

Kathleen Gorey-McSorley is a 15 year old Celtic Fiddler. In May she was in New York where she finished first in the slow aires division of an Irish fiddling competition (The Mid-Atlantic Fleadh). This qualifies her to compete in the "All Ireland Fleadh" in Cavan Town, Co. Cavan, Ireland in August. She also just received word that she has been selected to showcase at Contact East (www.contacteast.ca) in Antigonish in September. Finally, she has a new CD that will be out near the end of June with a release tour in July. The CD is entitled “Cheoil Binn” (Irish for “Sweet Music”).

4. Rik Reese & Neon Highway at Cavendish Beach Fest:

(Cavendish): July 10-11 marked the first time Rik Reese & Neon Highway performed in PEI and it was at Atlantic Canada's biggest Country Music Festival. Known for their "untamed country" shows, the band was invited to perform three shows during the five day music extravaganza (July 7-11) which featured Keith Urban, Taylor Swift, Lady Antebellum, Road Hammers and many more. "An incredible tip of the hat goes to the organizers for another first class festival and to our fellow performing ECMA artists", said Reese. www.rikreese.com

ABOUT WE, THE UNDERSIGNED

Boasting an array of metal/rock stylings, "We, the Undersigned" are set to dredge the stagnant waters of music's auto-tuned leaches. Bordering the thin divide between inanity and insanity, their music has been described as "fresh and prevalent" (hardtimes.com) and possessing "the chops and smarts to rock your military boots off" (the Coast)."Poised to turn some heads with their unique brand of art" (PureGrainAudio)".

Having already conquered Canada with two cross-nation tours, "We, the Undersigned" capped-off 2009 by signing with Halifax's Diminished Fifth Records and releasing their first, long anticipated full-length album, "Bleed the Constants"--a ten-song opus celebrating the union of absurdity with order, novelty with impermanence. Bestowed with a nomination for "Best Loud Recording of 2010" at this year's East Coast Music Association awards gala , WTU's latest offering has been well received by fans and campus radio, whilst simultaneously pissing-off pundits. Bands with whom We, the Undersigned are grateful to have played alongside include Protest the Hero, Fuck The Facts, Ninjaspy, What's He Building With?, Cancer Bats, the Motorleague, Iron Giant, Orchid's Curse, and The End.

3. Call For participation Culture Days New Brunswick / Appel à participation aux organisateurs-la Fête de la culture

FRANÇAIS SUIT

CULTURE DAYS IN NEW BRUNSWICK
September 20th -26th

Culture Days is a volunteer movement and annual event open to all communities and individuals who believe in the importance of arts and culture in Canadian life.

Call for Activity Organizers
Individual artists, diverse cultural groups, organizations, municipalities, and festivals old and new, small and large are coming together in the pan-Canadian volunteer movement known as Culture Days to catalyze and inspire greater public participation in arts and culture. Culture Days is open to all communities and individuals who believe in the importance of arts and culture in Canadian life.

How the movement works: Provinces and territories across Canada are each designating a weekend in September as Culture Days in their region. Volunteer committees are working at the provincial and national levels to secure media partners and corporate champions who will help get the word out to the Canadian public. During Culture Days, thousands of activity organizers across Canada will invite the public to experience and co-create arts and culture in the very communities where they live. Will you be one of them?

This is an open call for all individuals, groups and municipalities to join the movement and offer a free interactive arts or cultural activity during Culture Days in your region. Everyone is encouraged to get involved – whether you are a professional or amateur cultural creator (i.e. artist, artisan, educator, animateur, historian, curator, architect, designer, etc), group or organization, including culturally diverse, Aboriginal, urban and rural communities.

There is no fee to register
. If you have a free participatory or interactive arts or cultural activity to offer to the public during Culture Days in your region – be it new or something you already have planned...
Below are examples of typical cultural mediation activities that many cultural professionals and organizations offer already. The imagination of Culture Days activity organizers, however, should not be limited to these suggestions. Be creative, we say! Invent a new type of interaction!:

  • guided tours (galleries, museums, backstage, heritage sites, in costume)
  • outdoor walking tours (historical, architectural etc.)
  • creation workshops
  • interactive demonstrations of technique, how-to etc.
  • introductory courses / workshops / classes
  • « meet the artists » events
  • presentation / performance with discussion period
  • public rehearsals (with artists talk-back)
  • interactive performances
  • improv creation & activities
  • games, competitions
  • collective creations

Read about how you and your community can become involved – wherever you are

6. Volunteer Band Needed

The ECBS is working with the Dutch Mason Blues Festival to create a "Blues
Idol" competition in Truro throughout July.

Amateur singers will be able to enter one of three a singing auditions on

subsequent Saturdays at the Truro Mall. They will be judged by David de
Wolfe, a representative of Big Dog radio, the Truro Mall, the ECBS and
Mingo's music, and voted on by the public. The winner gets the chance to
sing a couple of songs at the Dutch Mason Festival and prizes from the Mall.

We (the ECBS) have been asked if we can supply an audition band. This would

require the band being in Truro on Saturday afternoons. PLEASE SEE ATTACHED
SCHEDULE. Each entrant will choose one classic blues song from the list
(attached with schedule).

The band will open with a few songs of their own and then provide the

accompaniment for the audition. Back line will be supplied.

Please note that this is a request for a volunteer band. The ECBS is not

receiving any money for this. If you're an up and coming band, this could be
very good exposure for you.

If you are interested, please contact Kim by email.
