ECMA 2010 Will Leave Legacy in Cape Breton

(Sydney, NS) - The 2010 East Coast Music Awards, Festival and Conference will remain in Cape Breton long after One Big Kitchen Party ends. With the generous support of the community and particularly the Rotary Club of Sydney, ECMA 2010 is pleased to announce the ECMA 2010/Rotary Legacy Scholarship.

The Legacy committee, chaired by Richard MacKinnon, hopes to raise in excess of $10,000 for a scholarship. An adjudication panel will select the recipient of this award based on criteria yet to be determined. The long-term goal is to have a scholarship that will continue into the future, if funding allows. One scholarship, valued at $2,500, will be awarded annually and will continue until the ECMA makes its cyclically-expected return in 2015.

"The opportunities we are providing for youth throughout this year's East Coast Music Awards, Festival, and Conference demonstrate that we are nurturing an attitude among our young, emerging artists that the music industry is a viable career choice," said Dr. Eric Favaro, event chair of ECMA 2010.  "This legacy scholarship affirms our commitment to that cause, and will provide worthy students with assistance to help them develop that career choice."

Funds for the 2010 ECMA/Rotary Legacy Scholarship will be acquired through the following means: One-time donation of funds from the Sydney Rotary Club - maximum of $5,000 - based on matched funds generated from ECMA 2010; sale of the CBU student CD to be launched at the Soundwaves concert at Membertou Trade and Convention Centre on Wednesday, March 3; funds raised through the auction of centerpieces created by Design students at the Marconi Campus of the Nova Scotia Community College for the 2010 Industry Brunch taking place at Membertou Trade and Convention Centre on March 5, 2010; and private donations.

At total of 62 centrepieces were created by the Marconi Campus students from the graphic design and metal fabrication programs, giving students valuable experience, a connection to the current event, and a hand in the legacy that will live on in the area.

"This scholarship supported by the ECMA and the Sydney Rotary Club will allow more CBU students to follow their dreams in pursuing an education that will help them develop a career in the music industry," added MacKinnon.

The 2010 Cape Breton event is an annual event organized by the East Coast Music Association as a critical part of its mission statement. The 2010 event will take place in Sydney, NS from March 4-7, 2010.

The East Coast Music Association would like to acknowledge the financial support of FACTOR and the Government of Canada through the Department of Canadian Heritage (Canada Music Fund) and of Canada's private radio broadcasters.
