PLANS, TRAINS, & AUTOMOBILES: OWEN STEEL ET AL & ‘EH CANADIAN’ CD RELEASE TOUR

Fredericton, New Brunswick-based act Owen Steel ‘et al’ are preparing for the arrival of their first full length, self-titled album, a definitive collection of folk/roots songs and stories courtesy of songwriter Owen Steel. Perfecting his craft through extensive touring and live performances for a number of years now, Owen Steel has dedicated the past year to capturing his music in proper physical form, and the payoff is well worth the wait. The album was recorded mainly live off the floor by Fredericton based engineer Evan Hansen (The Olympic Symphonium, Weak Size Fish) at Salty Towers in St. Andrews, N.B, and features appearances from some of the regions’ most prominent performers (A.G. Olmstead, Tom Easley, Kelly Waterhouse, Babette Hayward, etc.). Upon the albums release in early March, Owen Steel, alongside percussionist Mike Humble, will for the first time tour from coast to coast, in the most appropriate of ways; playing shows onboard VIA rail trains from Halifax to Vancouver, with stops along the way.  Since the world around him inspires his music so much, it’s entirely fitting that Owen be playing his music as the gorgeous landscape and scenery of the Canadian wilderness passes by.

Steel has been playing on his own since his high school years, but recently his musical career has taken a completely new direction with the creation of Owen Steel ‘et al’. Steel’s intention with ‘et al’ was to involve his musician friends and peers in his music; a sort of revolving door of accomplished musicians making their mark on his songs. Most significantly, Owen enlisted the talents of percussionist Mike “Mumble” Humble (Gordon Gets Lost, Weak Size Fish) and bassist Scott Culligan (Vetch, Joel Leblanc Trio) to join him live and in the studio, and the grooves of an upright bass and experimental percussion techniques gave Owen’s music a whole new life. The three recorded the album this past summer and fall, making sure that the album perfectly encapsulated the energy, humour, and musical compatibility so present in their live shows. The album is a significant notch on songwriter Owen’s belt, and a turning point in his journey of getting his voice heard. Influenced as much by the music surrounding him as the experiences that shape him, Owen’s music presents a young man coming into his own. With themes ranging from growing old and family, to skinny dipping and spotting moose, each of the 13 songs on the album shine with quirkiness and honesty, are delivered with confidence by Owen, and are backed expertly by ‘et al’.

Starting in March and finishing in early April, the ‘Eh Canadian CD Release Tour’ will see the duo of Owen and percussionist ‘Mumble’ travelling and performing onboard VIA Rail as part of the railways “On-Board Musicians Series”. Setting out in the East Coast (Halifax) and making their way to the West (Vancouver), the duo will also be stopping for shows in most major Canadian cities (Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Edmonton, Calgary) as well as shows in smaller cities and towns across the country. In addition, they will also be performing an official showcase during Canadian Music Week (March 10th-14th) in Toronto. Appearances on campus radio stations, reviews and interviews in music publications both in print and online, and much more are expected as the group set out with their finished album, ready to make new fans and share their music with audiences onboard trains, in bars and cafes, and everywhere else they may go. Upon their return home, CD release dates throughout the Maritimes will be announced.

-Performance highlights include stops at some Canada’s best middle-level venues, such as The Railway Club in Vancouver and The Blacksheep Inn in Wakefield, P.Q, not to mention shows during Canadian Music Week (CMW) in Toronto.

- The album promises to give listeners a peak into the mind of this unique young performer.

-Owen Steel Et Al are sure to put a smile on the face and a tap in the toes of all that are lucky enough to catch a show. Along with the music, the onstage banter, band chemistry, and great storytelling talents of Owen Steel create a fun, unique show experience that both passengers on the trains and patrons in the bars and clubs will enjoy. Owen is already recognized and respected in the East Coast music community despite his young age, and he fully intends to continue the journey, of getting his voice heard, westward.

OWEN STEEL ET AL (2010)
Owen Steel Music 2010

Release Date: March 7th, 2010
Format: Compact Disc, Digital Release

Recorded over the Summer and Fall of 2009, ‘Owen Steel et al’ is a culmination of songwriter Owen Steel’s songs and stories of life – in both its glory and its downfall – change, nature, family, and joy of ‘the road less travelled’. The majority of the songs were captured live off the floor at New Brunswick’s legendary ‘Salty Towers’ by sound engineer Evan Hansen (The Olympic Symphonium, Weak Size Fish) and later mastered by J. Lapointe (Joel Plaskett, Hot Toddy). ‘Owen Steel et al’ is the debut album from one of the East Coast’s most unique and promising up-and-coming acts. Songs range from upbeat, pure sing-a-long style enjoyment, to more somber, reflective ballads with resonating lyrics. Filling out his songs with the grooves of an upright bass, the beat of experimental ‘box’ percussion, and backing vocals from some of the Maritime’s most gorgeous young voices, Owen Steel has completed his first album on his own terms, and is ready for listeners nation-wide to hear his finished work.

3. Noémie Auffrey-Jones brings home the Gold! / Noémie Auffrey-Jones médaillée d’or à Drummondville

Communiqué de Presse francophone et anglophone

Noémie Auffrey-Jones brings home the Gold!

With her second win in Québec territory within the last year, Noémie earned the 1st place at Drummondville’s “En Scène” and singing competition. She performed in the semi-finals on Saturday afternoon, delivering a convincing rendition of Annie Villeneuve’s “Mon Héro” which earned her a spot in Sunday’s final. She took the stage and wowed the audience and judges with a touching and crystal clear rendition of Céline Dion’s “Ce n’était qu’un rêve” She earned rave reviews from the judges and the audience was very appreciative of Noémie’s authenticity. Noémie has had quite the year with three consecutive wins. Last July, she won in Trois Pistoles, Qc. She then earned the top spot at the Sussex Balloon Festival. Now, with this win, Noémie is ecstatic. She knew she’d done the best she could, so regardless of the result, she said she was proud of herself. It’s been quite the journey for Noémie, but she couldn’t be happier as she’s living her dream, doing exactly what she loves: singing and performing

This annual event allows artists to meet and share the stage, delivering sound performances to mass audiences. The event also consists of training, workshops and meetings with professional artists.

7. Bringing Your Career to Another Level. The Art of Managing Your Career
February 23, 2010

Since its publication in 2002, The The Art of Managing Your Career has been an essential resource guide for self-employed artists and cultural workers in live performing arts; writing and publishing; visual arts and craft; film, television and broadcasting; digital media; music and sound recording; and heritage.

Over the years, building on the strong interest in the cultural sector for this document, CHRC has developed a series of complementary resources to enhance its content and to assist in using it as a teaching tool.

In 2007, CHRC added the discipline enhancements. Developed by artists and cultural workers, they provide emerging self-employed artists and cultural workers with pertinent and practical information to better manage their careers. The enhancements offer information, resources, tips & pitfalls, and links to relevant websites in eight disciplines: crafts; dance and choreography; film and television; music and sound recording; digital media; theatre; visual arts; and writing.

To assist teachers in delivering the material, CHRC developed a Teacher's Guide. The Guide provides suggestions about how to use The Art of Managing Your Career to introduce emerging artists to basic principles and practices of career planning and career development as self-employed workers. The Guide is most used by teachers at the high school level.

In 2009, to respond to the changes in the cultural sector over the past five years, CHRC updated the 2002 version of The Art of Managing Your Career to include fresh and original examples, brand-new links to useful websites, and up-to-date information on finance and technology.

Then this year, CHRC developed Course Modules for The Art of Managing Your Career for delivery at the post-secondary level through colleges, universities and professional associations. The 16 Course Modules are designed for artists and cultural workers from all disciplines. They include numerous handouts that will give working artists and cultural workers the confidence and knowledge to successfully manage their careers or businesses in the cultural sector. Based on adult education principals, the modules are highly participatory and provide opportunities to practice and use skills and competencies essential to self-management. The material is presently available in English only; a French version is in development.
Visit our
website for additional information.

The Cultural Human Resources Council (CHRC) is committed to strengthening the cultural labour force, and strives to be at the centre of vision and forward thinking in the area of cultural human resources development. CHRC brings together representatives of arts disciplines and cultural industries in the cultural sector to address the training and career development needs of employers and cultural workers including artists, technical staff and managers To become a member of CHRC please visit our website..

Reprinted from the Times Transcript - http://timestranscript.canadaeast.com/article/935625

Communiqué finalistes Éloizes 2010

A benefit concert for Haiti, featuring some of the province's top musical acts, is planned for Friday, Feb. 26 at 7 p.m. in the Moncton Wesleyan Celebration Centre.

Country rockers The Divorcees, Saint John pop artist Stephanie Mainville and two-thirds of blues rockers Chris Colepaugh & The Cosmic Crew, Colepaugh and Lynn Daigle, will perform.

Mission Possible: Haiti Day is organized by Advance Savings Credit Union, JumpStart720, Sun Life Financial and the Greater Moncton Chamber of Commerce.

"Our community is overwhelmed by the situation in Haiti and many have expressed a deep desire to help," says Jenn Marr, community promotions officer of Advance Savings Credit Union. "We are amazed at the outstanding support we've already experienced as we've worked to pull this event together. We know this will be a great show and it's all because each one of these amazing artists, and every person who buys a ticket, simply want to help the people of Haiti during their darkest hour."

Colepaugh echoed those thoughts yesterday.

"For people to get together and show their support is an amazing thing," he says. "These people (in Haiti) are in dire straits down there and people should be doing whatever they can to help."

Tickets for the Mission Possible Haiti benefit concert are $20 each and are available online at TicketWindow.ca, Steve's Diner on Coverdale Road in Riverview and Frank's Music on Carson Drive in Moncton.

Along with the benefit concert, organizers had a stylish "Mission Possible: Haiti" T-shirt designed which they are selling for $10 each.

"We want to see everyone in the tri-community wearing one of these T-shirts on February 26," says Paula Morand, founder of JumpStart720. "We'll be sending out letters and order forms to local businesses inviting them to purchase T-shirts for their staff and allowing them to wear the shirts on February 26 to show their support for the situation in Haiti."

T-shirts will be available for purchase by the general public beginning on Monday at any of the Moncton or Riverview locations of Advance Savings Credit Union (10 Record St., 141 Weldon St., 960 St. George Blvd. and 620 Coverdale Road), at all Sobeys locations as well as at the Wesleyan Celebration Centre during the concert.
